I completely agree with Larken's points - and like always: perfect illustrations and analogies! One thing though: a thousand years (or so) ago in Europe there were Kings, Dukes, etc, and all the population payed "tribute" to them. These ruling guys told a different story than a modern "government" - did they promise only "security" perhaps? Because in their worldview other Kings, Dukes, etc. could come anytime to the land and rob the people? What else did they promise?

A modern "government" promises more - infrastructure, health, freedom, and security (etc.).

My point/remark is simply: it's not only modern kinds of "power" which rely on these stories - it's thousands of years old, and that's why most people struggle to understand what they are doing, struggle to stop believing, it's inherited, it's in the people's material and immaterial DNA.
