The absence of a visible wound should have been the end of the story. If not that, then the failure to locate or disclose the bullets from the "assassination attempt" - should have settled the matter. There really is no meaningful debate on this matter. But there is also some internal contradictions in the claim that there was an "assassination attempt":
(a) Supersonic bullets make a deafening sound close to the bullet trajectory - not a "whizzing sound" as the candidate reported hearing.
(b) The bullet photograph at the "assassination attempt" was the second known photograph of its kind at that exposure time. The first is an obvious fraud - for one thing the bullet path doesn't align with the bullet orientation.
